Just boating - do either boat race and reach the end with out getting any gears. Don't have restless yet.

Each building earns a set amount every X minutes / hours. It will only store one times worth so if the building gets 100 gold every 10 minutes it will only have 100 coins waiting for you even if it has been 30 minutes. Hotels also have event slots. If you have more than one slot unlocked it will continue to do all events you queued up until they all are all done. This is in addition to the amount the building gets every X minutes / hours.
